Chapter 22

The next morning Ellie was back in the office, her team around her as they had a briefing.

“Kent did we get any information from the chemist…Melanie Stokes?” Ellie asked as she leafed through paperwork in front of her.

“No Ma’am, Mrs Stokes said she didn’t see or hear anything out of the ordinary during the day and she had no reason to go out the back until closing time as it was her usual routine to take the rubbish out with her as she locked up.” Kent said as she read from Melanie’s statement.

“Great” muttered Ellie. “Has anyone found any witnesses?” she asked the room, but no response came forward. Ellie was frustrated and Gavin could see that, so he started with his information hoping to get his boss out of her gloom.

“Doc has more information on the murder weapon. She says it’s definitely metal and not wood, it’s also a galvanised metal as she could find no rust particles adhering to the wounds. She’s also done some preliminary tests on the amount of force it would have taken to inflict the fatal blow. According to the Doc it wouldn’t have taken much strength to carry out these killings…in fact she said anyone relatively able-bodied could have swung the weapon hard enough to kill.”

“Even better…so what we have is nothing?” Ellie asked in dismay. She stood up and started pacing in front of the board, she was studying the areas in which each victim was found. It was then that she noticed that Kent had added the locations of the other murders too. Ellie stopped and looked closely at the locations. An idea suddenly came to her, and it lit her face up instantly. She turned back to her team with a glint in her eye.

“We need to look for patterns, it’s the only evidence left to us right now. My first question to you all is, who has most reason to kill drug dealers?”

“Junkies that owe them money?” Harris suggested.

“Yes, but junkies usually owe money to maybe one or two dealers…not every single one in the area. Who else?” Ellie asked.

“What about a vigilante? Trying to clean up the area?” offered Gavin and Ellie could tell that his mind was firmly on the cocoon patrol when he said this.

“It’s a distinct possibility Gav, especially now we know that it doesn’t need much strength to carry out these attacks. My only reservation about this line of thought is that the first person attacked in this manner was not a dealer, it was one of the vigilantes.” Ellie reminded him but she wasn’t unconvinced of the group being involved in this. “Anyone else?” Ellie asked but her team just looked back at her.

“How about the families of addicts” she said to them. “Look at the positions of the attacks…do you notice what is bang in the middle of all of these places? The community Centre…where a group of addicts families meet up a couple of times a week.” Ellie finished as all eyes started to brighten in comprehension.
